Spectroscopic methods for liquid mirror telescopes

چکیده

Different methods of spectroscopy with LMTs are described: the objective prism method (a), the parallel (b) and perpendicular (c) long slit methods, the holographic FTS method (d), and the scanning multislit method (e). Advantages and drawbacks of each method are pointed out and estimates of nightly performances are given. Equivalence in the photon-limited regime between all methods offering a full-strip survey (b, c, d) is established, and differences due to CCD read-out mode are discussed. Methods (a) and (e) do not pretend full-strip coverage but may be found more efficient in terms of scientific output. Method (e) is particularly interesting, eliminating all drawbacks of (a) at the cost of increased complexity.

Elliminating the Coriolis Effect in Liquid Mirrors

If uncorrected, the Coriolis force due to the rotation of the Earth causes significant aberration of images produced by large liquid-mirror telescopes. We show that this problem can be eliminated by a fixed compensating tilt of the liquidmirror rotation axis. The required tilt angle, which is a function of latitude and mirror rotation rate, is of order 10 arcsec for current telescopes. This res...

I review the present status of liquid mirror telescopes. In a nutshell: LMTs do work and several have been built and used. Extensive interferometric tests of liquid mirrors (the largest one having a diameter of 2.5 meters ) show diffraction limited performance. A large quantity of astronomical data have been taken at the NASA 3-m LMT and are currently being analyzed. Finally, I shall address th...

We review the present status of liquid mirror telescopes. Interferometric tests of liquid mirrors (the largest one having a diameter of 2.5 meters ) show excellent optical qualities. The basic technology is now sufficiently reliable that it can be put to work. Indeed, a handful of liquid mirrors have now been built that are used for scientific work. A 3.7-m diameter LMT is presently being built...

Optical Design and Fabrication for an Extremely Large Telescope

Three large segmented-mirror telescopes already exist -Keck I, Keck II and Hobby Eberly. Others are in work or have been proposed, including the Gran Telescopio CANARIAS (GTC), the Large Aperture MultiObject Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST), the Mexican Infrared-Optical Telescope (TIM) and the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). These projects serve as the starting point for the design of ...

Liquid Mirror Telescopes: History

A history of Liquid Mirror Telescope (LMT) experimentation is provided. The concept can be traced to Ernesto Capocci of the Naples Observatory (1850), but it was not until 1872 that Henry Skey of the Dunedin Observatory in New Zealand constructed the rst working laboratory LMT. The 1909 experiments by Robert Wood at Johns Hopkins University exposed some of the strengths and weaknesses of the LM...
